Full Grain Leather
Full grain leather comes from the top layer of the hide. The signature characteristic of this type of leather is that the surface patina will burnish and beautify the more it is used. Essentially making it the most beautiful leather money can buy. But be cautious of labels claiming to be made out of 100% full grain leather. Many inferior products use look-alike vinyl as a substitute or spray lower quality leather to make it look expensive. Top Grain Leather
The second highest grade of leather you can purchase is top grain leather. This leather is split from the top layer of blemished hide before it is thoroughly sanded and refined to be used to make leather products. The process of sanding down the leather removes the distinct scars and brands, which prevent the leather from being able to fully age as well as full grain leather. While this material is still strong and durable, it is now lacking the strongest fibers.
Genuine Leather
The next level of leather is genuine leather. Genuine leather is what is left after the top is split off. Genuine leather can be either smooth or rough, as a result, the surface is generally spray painted to resemble higher quality leather. Genuine leather is great for lining bags and briefcases.
Bonded Leather
As the name implies, bonded leather is a combination of dust and shaving that are then pressed and glued together. As far as durability and elegance go, a bonded leather bag usually looks like it got run over by a truck. It is weak and degrades rather quickly. Many book covers are made using bonded leather.
